Palm Pokemon: #152 Politoed

Summer has finally arrived, with the mercury hitting 30C over the past few days. It makes me want to get outside in the sun. I actually want to go out into the backyard and throw the frisbee for my dog. I can have breakfast on the deck in the morning sun, and Amber just kept bringing back the frisbee for me to throw.

Of course, I can only be out for a little while before the mosquitos try to eat me alive, but that’s par for the course during bug season. I can get away from it for a little by taking the canoe out on the river … or by running really fast, but I can’t do that for very long.

Partly inspired by the fact that I’d like something to eat all of the bugs, my next poke-friend is Politoed. Who looks a little like a frog. Okay, I also picked Politoed because I happened to have suitable colours available in my stash. This is an important deciding factor when there isn’t anywhere to buy yarn within walking/biking/public transit distance. Haha, as if my hometown has public transit.

To make Politoed, I had to use a new technique, popular in free-form crochet: the two coloured spiral. If you’ve ever wanted to try it out, this pattern includes instructions for the simple, single crochet spiral that I used for Politoed’s stomach. I made Politoed with three colours (green, yellow, and pink), although you could also use blue for the little antenna on the top of his head.

Happy Hooking.

Instructions:

Notes: Do not stuff arms.

Stomach Spiral

Begin with a green magic ring, and sc 4 in the ring. Do not tighten yet. Drop the green for now, leaving a large loop to make it easy to pick up, and attach yellow yarn to your hook. Sc 4 in the ring with yellow. Tighten the ring.

Pick up the green again, and work 8 sc over the 4 yellow stitches (2 in each stitch). Drop the green¬†again, leaving a large loop so it’s easy to pick up again.

Pick up the yellow. Work 24 sc over the green stitches (2 in each stitch). Slip stitch in the next stitch. Fasten off the yellow.

Pick up the green, and work 24 stitches around (1 in each stitch) Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to the body.
